VALLEJO, Calif. — A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck near Vallejo on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The temblor hit at 12:41 p.m. Pacific time, approximately 2 miles south of downtown Vallejo, with a depth of 6.1 miles.

Initial reports from the USGS indicated the earthquake’s magnitude was 3.6, but early data had suggested it was 3.5. As seismologists analyze the data, they may revise the earthquake’s magnitude and update their shake-severity map.

USGS’ website showed that residents in parts of the Bay Area reported weak to light shaking. A spokesperson for the USGS noted that aftershocks could occur in the days or weeks following the quake, and these can be of equal or larger magnitude than the initial event.

Officials remind the public to remain prepared, as aftershocks can affect already vulnerable locations, potentially causing further damage. They encourage residents to stay informed with updated data from the USGS as it becomes available.

This earthquake adds to the seismic activity that regularly affects California, particularly the Bay Area, which is known for its fault lines.
