Major Fire Engulfs Dagenham Flat Block, Prompting Large Scale Rescue Operation
At approximately 02:44 AM today, emergency services were alerted to a significant fire at a block of flats located on Freshwater Road in Dagenham.
A total of 40 fire engines and around 225 firefighters were dispatched to combat the blaze, which affected the entirety of the building, including its roof and surrounding scaffolding.
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe reported that the first fire crew arrived within five minutes of the call. In response to the severity of the situation, a major incident was declared, which has since been rescinded.
In his address, Commissioner Roe expressed gratitude towards the responding crews and officers who operated under dangerous conditions to evacuate residents and manage the fire effectively.
Roe confirmed that all individuals within the building have been accounted for. Firefighters successfully evacuated more than 80 residents, with 20 rescues conducted. Some residents were assisted using fire escape hoods, providing them with 15 minutes of clean, filtered air in smoke-filled environments.
Four individuals received treatment from London Ambulance Service personnel, with two being transported to the hospital for further care.
The Brigade’s Control Officers managed 16 calls before and during the incident, including providing critical fire survival guidance to residents via the Fire Survival Guidance App.
Innovations such as drones and turntable ladders were deployed to give incident commanders a clear view of the situation as well as provide aerial water support.
A rest center for displaced residents has been established at Beacontree Health and Leisure Centre, where London Fire Brigade officers are collaborating with community support teams to assist those affected.
An investigation into the cause of the fire will commence, with scrutiny expected regarding known fire safety issues tied to the building.
As Commissioner Roe concluded, thoughts remain with everyone impacted, and the Brigade commits to supporting the local community in the days ahead.
