Major Fire Erupts in Woolloongabba, Triggering Smoke Cloud Over Brisbane CBD
A substantial fire broke out in Woolloongabba, a suburb in Brisbane, causing significant smoke coverage over the central business district on Wednesday. Emergency services were alerted to the fire on Hubert Street at approximately 4:30 p.m., responding to reports of a building engulfed in flames. The incident prompted police to close nearby roads, including Gibbon, Stanley, Raid, and Hawthorne Streets, and to declare an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
One individual, suffering life-threatening airway burns, was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Queensland Ambulance Service. Although no other hospitalizations have been reported, four ambulance units have remained stationed at the location to provide immediate medical assistance as necessary.
About 15 fire crews are engaged in battling the blaze, which is described as “quite big” by a spokesperson from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service. The firefighting efforts have employed a ladder platform to access the high flames, though crews have not yet entered the building due to safety concerns, with surrounding structures at risk of catching fire as well.
The fire’s spread was exacerbated by windy conditions, which fanned thick plumes of smoke across the area. Fire service personnel have cautioned the public to avoid the vicinity and advised those within the exclusion zone to remain indoors to minimize exposure to smoke and potential hazards.
Witness reports suggest that the roof of the affected building has collapsed. Among the damaged properties are believed to be several businesses, including a wedding and events venue. Queensland Ambulance Service personnel are still present at the scene to provide healthcare and support.
