On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, a significant outage affected multiple platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Messenger. The outages were reported by a large number of users and began shortly before 1 pm Eastern Time.

According to Downdetector.com, there was a sharp increase in reported outages from users of these services. As of 12:51 pm, more than 23,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while over 51,000 users reported issues with Facebook.

Meta acknowledged the issue in a brief statement on Facebook, stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can”.

The cause of the outage has not been disclosed by Meta, and the company has not provided an estimated time for when the services will be restored. Users are advised to check for updates as the situation develops.
