Bear Mountain Bridge Renovation Plans

GARRISON, N.Y. — The Bear Mountain Bridge, the oldest span operated by the New York State Bridge Authority, is set to receive significant upgrades starting in early 2026. Opened in 1924, the bridge, which carries Routes 6, 202, and the Appalachian Trail over the Hudson River, was once the longest suspended span in the world.

The first of several scheduled public meetings took place Thursday evening at the public library in Garrison, where Bridge Authority officials detailed the planned renovations. The upgrades aim to replace the aging bridge deck, enhance concrete barriers, widen sidewalks, and improve accessibility for all users.

At 2,255 feet long, the bridge accommodates millions of vehicles annually while also serving pedestrians and cyclists. Planners reassured attendees that at least one pedestrian sidewalk will remain open during construction to ensure continued access.

Among the upgrades, the installation of climb deterrent fencing was highlighted as a critical priority, with community members emphasizing the need for more safety measures to prevent suicides on the bridge. “It’s vital that we implement effective deterrents to protect lives,” one attendee stated during the meeting.

State officials mentioned that further public meetings are planned to gather community feedback before construction begins. The projected timeline for completing the renovation work is by the fall of 2027.

After celebrating its centennial last year, the Bear Mountain Bridge continues to hold historical significance and is recognized for its connection between the towns of Bear Mountain on the west and Cortlandt on the east bank of the Hudson River. The bridge has become an integral route for motorists while enhancing access to the popular Bear Mountain area, known for hiking and outdoor activities.

For its centennial celebration, events included a Centennial Motorcade and a documentary screening titled ‘Bear Mountain Bridge: the First 100 Years’ held at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater in Peekskill, NY. The upcoming renovations will further enhance this historic bridge’s functionality and safety for years to come.
