Neversink Mountain Wildfire Reading Pennsylvania

A significant wildfire is currently raging on Neversink Mountain in Reading, Pennsylvania, prompting emergency responses and evacuations in the area. The fire, which began around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, has spread rapidly due to windy and dry conditions, characteristic of the severe drought affecting the Northeast United States.

Residents near South 18th and 19th Streets and in the area of Ganter Lane and Neversink Mountain Road in Lower Alsace Township have been issued evacuation orders. Those affected are advised to seek shelter at the Amanda E. Stout Elementary School.

The fire is visible from the iconic Reading Pagoda, and residents in the surrounding areas have been warned to expect a smoke smell and a visible glow on the horizon. The Birdsboro Office of Emergency Management has indicated that this incident could last over a week due to the challenging conditions.

No casualties have been reported so far, but the fire has the potential to cause localized transport disruptions, and authorities may close routes near the wildfire location. Residents are advised to stay indoors, especially those with chronic respiratory illnesses, to minimize exposure to smoke.

The region has been under a countywide burn ban, and the drought, which has seen 41 days without measurable precipitation since September 29, has exacerbated the fire risk. Multiple large brush fires have been reported in Southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, highlighting the critical fire conditions in the area.
