Maldives Ferry Sinking Rescue Operation

MALE, Maldives — A ferry carrying 48 individuals sank off the coast of the Maldives after encountering severe weather, though all passengers were rescued safely, local authorities confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred on March 2, 2025, as the vessel, known as Huvan, was traveling from Dhigurah to Male.

As the ferry began to take on water, passengers, including four children, jumped into the sea amid escalating panic. Video footage shared on social media depicted alarming scenes of water pouring into the vessel while passengers struggled with faulty life jackets. Emergency teams responded quickly to the distress call.

Local police reported that rescue efforts ensured the safety of all 45 passengers and three crew members on board. Authorities acted swiftly, dispatching emergency teams immediately following the alarm. “We commend the swift response of our rescue teams and all those who assisted in this operation,” police stated in a release.

The sinking occurred under a yellow weather alert issued for storms and strong winds in the region, which had been subject to record rainfall. In response to the dangerous weather, President Mohamed Muizzu declared March 3 a public holiday to ensure public safety.

As part of the investigation launched to determine the cause of the sinking, officials are examining the technical issues related to the life jackets that failed to inflate appropriately. The Maldives, renowned for its picturesque white sand beaches and luxurious resorts, often faces severe weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season.

The swift rescue of all passengers and crew members stands as a testament to the effective emergency response capabilities of the local authorities in the face of maritime adversity.
