Maldives President India Visit 2024

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on a four-day state visit to India, arriving on Sunday amid efforts to strengthen bilateral relations. The visit takes place against the backdrop of economic challenges in the Maldives and aims to repair and bolster ties between the two nations. During his stay, President Muizzu will engage in high-level talks with Indian officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These discussions are expected to lead to agreements in the infrastructure sector, potentially enhancing the relationship between India and the Maldives.

In addition to meetings in New Delhi, President Muizzu will travel to Mumbai and Bengaluru to participate in business events. This visit is pivotal, marking an opportunity for both countries to foster diplomatic and economic ties further. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, expressing optimism, remarked, “Pleased to call on President Muizzu today at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to enhance India-Maldives relationship.” The Ministry of External Affairs had previously noted that this visit is anticipated to invigorate cooperation and strengthen people-to-people connections between the two nations.

President Muizzu’s trip follows his attendance at Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June, highlighting his first bilateral visit to India. Upon arrival in New Delhi, he received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he met President Droupadi Murmu. The Maldivian delegation was introduced to Indian officials present, further signifying the importance of this diplomatic engagement.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the enduring ties between the two countries, stating, “The relations of India and Maldives are centuries old, and India is Maldives’ closest neighbor and friend.” He noted that this partnership is a cornerstone of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. Discussions between Modi and Muizzu included topics such as climate change, economic cooperation, and security.

A major highlight of the visit was the decision to begin negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement to boost economic relations. Additionally, the introduction of the RuPay card in the Maldives and the agreement on a currency swap arrangement underscore economic cooperation. President Muizzu praised India’s role as a “key partner” and thanked the Indian government for its assistance, including support worth $400 million to aid the Maldives’ economic stability.

During his stay, President Muizzu also visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. His itinerary includes visits to several Indian cities, reflecting the comprehensive nature of his diplomatic mission.
