Memphis Man Stealing Phones Nashville Tourists

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis man was arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from tourists in Nashville, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD). Sherman Guy, 39, is accused of using stolen phones to access money-transfer apps and steal from unsuspecting visitors.

Guy was free on a $29,500 bond for three separate arrests in 2024 when he was apprehended early Friday morning in Downtown Nashville. His latest charge is linked to a December 2024 incident in which a Maryland man had his phone stolen while visiting a downtown bar.

According to police reports, once the thief stole the phone, he used the Venmo and Apple Pay features to transfer thousands of dollars from the victim’s accounts. Additionally, Guy allegedly made a $1,700 purchase using one of the victim’s credit cards connected to Apple Pay at a Memphis jewelry store.

MNPD officers arrested Guy around 2 a.m. outside of a Broadway bar. “The repeated arrests of Sherman Guy serve as a reminder to all to safeguard belongings, especially cellphones, when out in public. Thieves are looking for them,” an MNPD spokesperson said.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety in Nashville areas frequented by tourists, who can often be targeted by thieves. Authorities encourage visitors to remain vigilant and secure their belongings while enjoying the city’s nightlife.
