Man Charged After Fan’s Fall from PNC Park During Game

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — A 21-year-old man has been charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor following a serious incident at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game on April 30. The Pennsylvania State Police announced the charges against Ethan Kirkwood of McKeesport, who is scheduled to appear in court on June 23.
Kirkwood is accused of providing alcohol to 20-year-old Kavan Markwood, who fell 21 feet from the outfield stands onto the field after reportedly consuming two beers purchased with Kirkwood’s help. Markwood suffered critical injuries, including damages to his skull, spine, and ribs, and was hospitalized at Allegheny General Hospital.
According to a criminal complaint, surveillance footage confirmed that Kirkwood purchased two 24-ounce cans of Miller Lite shortly before the fall. The footage shows Kirkwood and Markwood holding beers together and later indicates Kirkwood retrieving more alcohol approximately an hour before the fall occurred.
The incident took place during the seventh inning of a game between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. Witnesses reported that Markwood fell while celebrating a play by Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Dr. Al Philp, the chief medical officer at Allegheny General Hospital, provided an update on Markwood’s condition on May 7. “I’m happy to say that he’s progressed well,” Dr. Philp stated, noting that Markwood transitioned out of intensive care and is set to begin rehabilitation.
Following the fall, there were immediate responses from fellow fans and players, with many exhibiting concern for Markwood’s well-being. His girlfriend reported that Markwood had not consumed alcohol before entering the park and had only consumed two beers inside.
Kirkwood, who is awaiting his preliminary hearing, has not publicly commented on the charges. Meanwhile, Markwood’s family remains hopeful as he continues to recover.
