Man Dies in Self-Inflicted Shooting at Stone Mountain Park
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — A man died Thursday after opening fire and then shooting himself at Stone Mountain Park, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 16, 2025, prompting a large police response and the closure of hiking trails.
According to Stone Mountain Park police, witnesses reported hearing six gunshots. The man, who climbed over a fence at the mountain’s summit, was confronted by officers before turning the gun on himself. No other injuries were reported.
“We heard gunshots and ricochets,” said one witness, who asked not to be identified. “It was chaotic, and police quickly told us to leave the area.”
DeKalb County Police, Stone Mountain Police, and Stone Mountain Park Police responded to the scene. Crime scene tape was used to block off the hiking trails, and a person was seen being led away in handcuffs, though their involvement remains unclear.
Katie Rogers, a frequent hiker at the park, described the scene to FOX 5. “I saw a fire truck and a cop with an AR. He asked if I heard gunshots and told me to leave,” she said. “I come here all the time, and I never expected something like this.”
Stone Mountain, a 3,200-acre park near Atlanta, is known for its geological significance and controversial Confederate Memorial Carving.
