Man and Dog Killed in Suspected Bear Attack in Florida

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – A man and his dog were killed Monday morning in a suspected bear attack near the community of Jerome, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Authorities were alerted to the incident shortly after 7 a.m. and arrived on the scene quickly.
Officials identified the man as Robert Markel, 89. His body and that of his dog were discovered in different locations, within a couple hundred yards of each other, FWC spokesperson George Reynaud said. The attack occurred near the intersection of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, close to the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
Reynaud noted that authorities are investigating the incident as a potentially fatal attack by a bear. “Out of an abundance of caution, we urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and avoid the area,” Reynaud stated. Wildlife officers and local law enforcement are actively searching for the bear, which is believed to still be in the vicinity.
If confirmed, this would mark the first fatal bear attack in Florida’s recorded history. Tyson Matthews, another FWC spokesperson, confirmed the uniqueness of this situation, emphasizing the importance of public safety.
The FWC also reminded the public that black bears are the only species of bear found in Florida, with an estimated population of 4,050 across the state. They encourage citizens to not approach or try to track any wildlife, particularly in light of this tragic event.
Further details about the investigation will be released as they become available, as FWC continues to gather information regarding this incident.
