Memphis Police Chase I 55 Freeway Accident

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle while fleeing from police on Interstate 55 on Saturday afternoon.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) reported that around 1:19 p.m., officers attempted a traffic stop near the junction of I-55 South and I-240 West. Before officers could reach him, the unidentified driver exited his car and ran across the interstate.

As he fled, he was struck by a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu. The impact was fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no officers were injured during this incident.

The westbound lanes of I-240 and I-55 were closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation. The roadways have since reopened, but the crash has raised questions within the community regarding traffic stops and police pursuits.

Local resident Zina Clark expressed her shock over the incident. “Wow,” she said. “The police officers need better training for escalated situations.”

Clark also questioned the necessity of pursuing suspects on busy interstates. “If it’s not a life-and-death situation, you should let them go,” she added.

As the investigation continues, MPD has not yet released further details about the incident. They confirmed that the inquiry remains ongoing.
