Cody Balmer Governor's Mansion Firebombing

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Cody Balmer was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to attempted murder and multiple charges related to a firebombing at the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion. The incident occurred on April 13, 2025, when Balmer scaled a security fence and used Molotov cocktails to attack the residence while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were inside.

According to the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office, Balmer, 38, broke a window and threw a Molotov cocktail inside the governor’s mansion. Although he entered the building, video footage showed he was unable to gain access to the room where Shapiro and his family were sleeping.

Shapiro described the event as “chilling” and expressed the profound impact it had on his family. “It’s hard for me to stand before you today and utter the words ‘attempted murder,’ when it’s your own life,” he said in a news conference. He also highlighted the struggle to explain the situation to his children.

Following the attack, Balmer contacted 911, identifying himself and allegedly confessing to the crime. He expressed concerns about the war in Gaza, which he claimed motivated his actions. Balmer told police he would have attacked Shapiro with a hammer if he had found him inside, according to court documents.

Balmer’s defense attorney stated that Balmer was taking full responsibility for his actions. The property sustained severe damage from the fires, prompting Shapiro to urge action against political violence, which he said is discouraging candidates from running for office. Balmer’s attack occurred shortly after the Shapiro family celebrated Passover, raising further concerns about his motivations.

The incident has sparked discussions about safety for public officials and their families. Shapiro emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to ensure a secure environment for elected officials and their loved ones.
