Calvin Crew Sentencing Uber Driver Murder

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Calvin Crew was sentenced to life without parole on May 5, 2025, for the murder of Uber driver Christina Spicuzza. This verdict came exactly three years after Spicuzza was killed.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala described the case as a, quote, “brutal, senseless execution” of a mother of four who was simply trying to earn a living. The jury found Crew guilty of first-degree murder, as well as robbery and kidnapping. These charges stemmed from an incident on February 10, 2022, when Spicuzza picked up Crew as a passenger.

Evidence presented in court included dash camera footage from Spicuzza’s vehicle showing her pleading for her life as Crew held a gun to her head. After the ride, Spicuzza’s body was discovered two days later in a wooded area in Monroeville.

During sentencing, Crew chose not to attend. However, Spicuzza’s family delivered powerful victim impact statements, expressing their grief and anger toward Crew. Cindy Spicuzza, Christina’s mother, remarked, “You should have the death penalty, but we showed mercy,” highlighting the family’s request for a life sentence instead.

Brandon Marto, Spicuzza’s fiancé, condemned Crew as a coward for avoiding the courtroom. He urged the judge to impose the harshest sentence possible, saying, “I want him to suffer. I want him to sit for years.” Marto also recounted the love he shared with Spicuzza and how she uplifted him through personal struggles.

Judge Edward J. Borkowski acknowledged that Crew maintains his innocence and plans to appeal his conviction. Crew’s defense attorney described him as having a troubled past, facing several challenges throughout his life. Nonetheless, the judge indicated that the severity of Crew’s actions warranted the life sentence.

Christina Spicuzza’s family has emphasized the lasting impact of her loss, especially on her children. This case continues to resonate within the community as it spotlights the ongoing issues related to violence against women and the dangers faced by rideshare drivers.
