Man Struck and Killed by Vehicle Near Six Flags Great America

GURNEE, Ill. – A man died after being struck by a vehicle Monday night near Six Flags Great America, authorities said.
The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Washington Street near Route 21. Gurnee police reported that the man was walking in the eastbound lanes when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the man unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim, a male in his 50s, has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Two people were in the SUV involved but declined medical treatment after being evaluated by paramedics.
Gurnee Fire Department Lt. Joe Olsen stated that they dispatched an ambulance and other resources to the location after the call came in around 10:08 p.m. The Major Crash Assistance Team was called in to assist with the investigation.
Authorities shut down Washington Street for about five hours to reconstruct the scene and investigate the circumstances of the crash. This investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Gurnee Police Department at 847-599-7000, ext. 0.
As of now, it is unclear whether the driver will face any charges. An autopsy for the victim is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
