Mandatory Evacuation Ordered Due to Gas Leak in South Salt Lake

SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY — A gas leak prompted mandatory evacuations on Sunday evening, April 27, 2025, affecting residents between 3300 South and 3500 South, and West Temple to 200 West, according to the South Salt Lake Fire Department.
The evacuation was announced in a post on X at 7:29 p.m., urging residents to avoid the area. An evacuation shelter was set up at 3805 S. Main. Residents unable to evacuate were instructed to call the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center at 801-840-4100.
The situation developed after firefighters extinguished a truck fire caused by a fallen power line. While addressing the truck fire, crews observed flames emanating from the ground, indicating a gas leak was present.
The fire department is treating the situation as a controlled burn, with no gas readings detected east of West Temple. The gas supply is expected to be shut off for several hours.
A bus bridge was established between the Millcreek and Meadowbrook stations to bypass the area. Fire Chief Terry Addison estimated that around 300 people were evacuated.
At approximately 9 p.m., gas was shut off, and the fire was extinguished, but evacuation orders remained in effect as of 9:15 p.m. This story is still developing.
