Manhunt Underway for Suspect in Clapham Alkali Attack
Police in London have intensified their search for a man suspected of carrying out an alkali attack in Clapham, South London. The attack took place last night when a 31-year-old mother and her two daughters, aged eight and three, were injured after being doused with a corrosive substance. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Abdul Shakoor Ezedi, is believed to have thrown a child to the ground before fleeing the scene. Although their injuries are not life-threatening, they could be life-changing, according to the Metropolitan Police.
After attempting to escape in a car, the suspect collided with a stationary vehicle and subsequently fled on foot towards Clapham Common. The last sighting of Ezedi was on Caledonian Road, approximately eight miles away from the attack site. The police have released an image of Ezedi taken in a Tesco store, highlighting his distinctive facial injury.
The incident prompted members of the public to intervene, leading to injuries to three women and a man who came to the victims’ aid. They have since been discharged from the hospital. The Metropolitan Police urge the public to avoid approaching the suspect if spotted and to contact emergency services immediately.
In response to the attack, Home Secretary James Cleverly expressed shock and extended his thoughts to the victims and the individuals who intervened. NHS England data indicates that the North West region has recorded the highest number of incidents involving assaults with corrosive substances.
The British Transport Police have joined forces with the Metropolitan Police to aid in the investigation. Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for increased restrictions on the availability of dangerous substances, stating that household items containing corrosive materials pose a significant risk to public safety.
