Mark Cuban Speaking At Business Conference

DALLAS, Texas — Billionaire entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently shared career advice for young professionals, urging them to approach their careers like “free agents” in the job market. Cuban, 65, emphasized the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in a rapidly changing workforce.

“I tell every kid that asks, that you paid money to learn. Now it’s time to get paid to learn,” Cuban wrote in a social media post. “You need to be the best as you can at your job … But you are always a free agent. You can always be looking and learn more in a new job.”

Cuban’s advice stems from his own career trajectory. In his 20s, he taught himself computer programming despite having only one computer science class under his belt. This self-education led to the founding of his first startup, MicroSolutions, which he sold for $6 million in 1990.

However, career experts caution against interpreting the “free agent” mindset as a license to constantly job-hop. “Relationships matter. While staying open to opportunities is smart, being a ‘free agent’ doesn’t mean neglecting the importance of building trust, collaboration, and loyalty within your current role,” said Lindo, CEO of Career Nomad. “These relationships are often the gateway to future opportunities.”

Lindo also warned that constant job-hunting can lead to burnout and prevent individuals from fully immersing themselves in their current work. Instead, she recommends focusing on continuous learning and skill-building to stay relevant in a competitive job market.

Cuban’s advice aligns with broader trends in the workforce, where adaptability and lifelong learning are increasingly valued. According to a 2023 LinkedIn report, professionals who prioritize skill development are 30% more likely to land new opportunities.

For those looking to enhance their skills, CNBC offers an online course on AI and productivity, currently available at a 30% discount through February 11, 2025. The course covers practical applications, effective prompt-writing, and common mistakes to avoid.

As the job market evolves, Cuban’s “free agent” philosophy serves as a reminder for professionals to remain agile and proactive in their career development. Whether through formal education, on-the-job learning, or networking, the key to success lies in staying adaptable and open to new opportunities.
