Shanghai, ChinaFabian Marozsan secured his spot in the second round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on October 1, 2025, with a victory over Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka.

Marozsan, ranked 24th in the world, triumphed with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, marking his 24th tour-level win of the season. Last year, the Hungarian had recorded 23 wins, but with this match, he set a new personal best. He dominated the match by winning 83 percent of his first serve points.

Wawrinka, aiming to become the oldest Masters 1000 winner in history at age 40, struggled as Marozsan clinched the win on his third match point. “Winning here means a lot to me,” Marozsan, 25, said, recalling his fond memories of advancing to the quarter-finals in Shanghai in 2023.

Adrian Mannarino also advanced in the tournament, defeating former World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini 7-5, 7-6(5). The French player’s recent performance on hard courts has been impressive, making it to the fourth round of both the US Open and the Cincinnati Open.

Marozsan is set to face American Taylor Fritz in the next round, while Mannarino will take on Francisco Cerundolo. Other notable winners included Marin Cilic, who defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili, and Sebastian Baez, who toppled a home favorite. Zhang reached the fourth round in Shanghai in 2023, achieving the best result for a Chinese player at this event.

Overall, the first day of the Rolex Shanghai Masters showed a mix of veterans and rising stars making their mark, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.
