Martin Lewis Urges Pensioners to Claim Unclaimed Pension Credit Benefits
Martin Lewis, a well-known personal finance expert, has advised state pensioners to check their eligibility for pension credit, a benefit that could provide them with additional income. He highlighted that many pensioners stand to receive significant financial support, potentially totaling £11,600, by simply making a phone call.
According to Lewis, recent changes in benefit allocations mean that many state pensioners who were previously receiving winter fuel payments are now excluded, impacting their financial wellbeing during the colder months. “It’s become more crucial than ever because that up to £300 payment that did go to every pensioner is now dependent on Pension Credit,” Lewis stated.
The finance guru explained that Pension Credit is a chronically underclaimed benefit, urging pensioners to check their eligibility, especially those with low incomes. “Many of our most vulnerable people are not claiming this crucial payment, and we collectively have a responsibility to let them know about it,” Lewis emphasized.
Pension Credit is available to those over the age of 66 who meet certain income criteria. Single pensioners with a total weekly income less than £235, and couples with a combined weekly income under £350, may qualify. For those eligible, this credit can boost their annual income significantly.
Lewis advised pensioners to utilize online tools or contact the Pension Credit Helpline at 0800 99 1234 to check their eligibility. “Let’s make this really simple: if you’re a low-income pensioner and you don’t get pension credit, just go online and do the calculator,” he said. “Or if online scares you, just call up the pension credit hotline and just talk to someone.”
In addition to Lewis’s advice, Councillor Christine Robinson from Lewes District Council also encouraged pension-age residents to ensure they are receiving the benefits they are entitled to amidst the rising cost of living. She noted that Pension Credit can also provide access to additional benefits such as support for housing costs.
Those interested in claiming Pension Credit or seeking assistance with the application process are advised to contact local agencies like Citizens Advice for guidance.
