Massachusetts Celebrates Patriots’ Day as the Nation Marks Tax Deadline Extension
Massachusetts commemorates Patriots' Day on April 15th, celebrating its significant historical role in the Revolutionary War. The state holiday, established in 1894, honors the early battles of Lexington and Concord in the American Revolution, officially designated for April 19. However, the observation occurs every third Monday of April annually, marking a pivotal moment in American history.
This Patriots’ Day, Concord hosts a parade starting at 9 a.m., spanning 3.5 miles through Concord Center to the Old North Bridge. Meanwhile, Lexington continues its tradition of reenacting the Battle of Lexington, a longstanding event since 1971, attracting visitors over Patriots’ Day weekend.
Public transportation in Massachusetts operates on a weekday schedule, with the MBTA, buses, and ferries maintaining regular services. Federal agencies and most businesses in Massachusetts remain open, despite state offices, schools, and libraries closing for Patriots’ Day.
In light of this historical holiday, taxes for most Americans are not due until April 17th this year, extending the deadline due to the Patriots’ Day celebration. This extension is further impacted by the Emancipation Day legal holiday in Washington, D.C., occurring on April 16th, providing taxpayers additional time to file their returns.
