Massachusetts Warns of Toll Payment Scam Targeting EZDriveMA Customers

Ezdrivema Toll Scam Text Message

Massachusetts officials are warning EZDriveMA customers about a new text message scam targeting drivers with fake unpaid toll notices. The fraudulent messages request immediate payment for alleged unpaid tolls, often including links to malicious websites.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) issued an alert Thursday after receiving multiple reports of the scam. According to officials, the messages appear to come from legitimate sources but are designed to steal personal and financial information.

‘We urge all EZDriveMA customers to be vigilant and never click on links in unsolicited text messages,’ said MassDOT spokesperson Patrick Marvin. ‘Official communications about unpaid tolls will always come through verified channels, not random text messages.’

The scam comes as Massachusetts transitions to cashless tolling statewide. EZDriveMA, the state’s electronic toll collection system, serves over 2.5 million drivers. Authorities say the timing of the scam coincides with increased confusion about toll payment processes during the transition.

MassDOT advises customers to verify any toll-related communications through their official EZDriveMA account or by contacting customer service directly. The agency also recommends reporting suspicious messages to local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.

This is not the first time toll payment scams have targeted drivers. Similar schemes have been reported in other states, including New York and Florida, as cashless tolling becomes more widespread nationwide.
