Massive Auto Salvage Yard Fire Shuts Down 215 Freeway in Riverside
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A massive fire erupted Monday morning at an auto salvage yard near downtown Riverside, engulfing vehicles and trailers across a 3-acre area and prompting the closure of multiple lanes on the 215 Freeway.
The blaze, which began around 9:50 a.m. PST near Spruce Street and the 215 Freeway, sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from miles away. Firefighters from the Riverside County Fire Department, Cal Fire, and the Corona Fire Department responded to the scene to combat the flames.
“Numerous cars and commercial trailers were ablaze, creating a significant challenge for our crews,” said a spokesperson for the Riverside County Fire Department. “The fire spread rapidly due to the combustible materials in the salvage yard.”
Authorities closed several lanes of the 215 Freeway as a safety precaution, causing traffic delays during the morning commute. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
No injuries have been reported, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which threatened nearby structures and businesses.
