Massive Brush Fires Continue to Burn in Salem and Across Massachusetts
Firefighters in Massachusetts are battling multiple large brush fires, with one of the most significant blazes occurring in Salem. The fires, which began on Saturday, have burned through more than 100 acres of land in the Salem area alone.
The terrain between Salem, Peabody, and Lynn has proven particularly challenging for firefighters due to its secluded and rocky nature. Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne noted that the fires are difficult to extinguish because of the extensive dry brush and the lack of access to some areas.
In addition to Salem, other areas such as Middleton, Beverly, and Canton are also dealing with brush fires. In Middleton, a fire near the reservoir and power lines on Upton Hills Road has raised concerns, while in Beverly, a brush fire burned near shopping plazas, and in Canton, a wildfire was reported behind the Massachusetts Hospital School.
The dry conditions and breeze have exacerbated the situation, making it hard for crews to completely put out the fires. Firefighters are using helicopter water drops and drones to identify and combat the heavy burn areas.
Despite the proximity of the fires to residential areas, no structural damage or injuries have been reported. However, residents are advised to be cautious due to the ongoing smoke and the potential for the fires to flare up again with wind changes.
In a separate incident, one person was found dead in a brush fire at an encampment in Millbury, highlighting the severe risks associated with these fires.
The timing of these fires is particularly concerning as thousands of tourists are expected to visit Salem for Halloween events, although the fires have not impacted the downtown festivities.
