Massive Fire Destroys Downtown Ovid Block, Multiple Businesses Lost
OVID, N.Y. — A massive fire tore through downtown Ovid on Tuesday evening, destroying multiple businesses, apartments, and triggering a countywide emergency response. The blaze, reported at 6:06 p.m. on January 21, consumed the Big M grocery store, Uptown Diner, Eva’s Laundry, Italian Kitchen, and several apartments, leaving the block in ruins.
Over 200 firefighters from Seneca County and surrounding areas battled the flames in sub-zero temperatures. Officials described the building as “fully involved” upon arrival, forcing crews into a defensive strategy. By 8:15 p.m., the structure had collapsed entirely, with firefighters working through the night to contain the inferno.
Emergency responders conducted a thorough search of the apartments above the Big M, confirming all residents were safely evacuated with no reported injuries. However, the fire spread southward, engulfing adjacent buildings on Main Street. Heavy excavation equipment was brought in to assist in the effort, which continued into the early hours of January 22.
“This is a devastating loss for our community,” said a local official, who requested anonymity. “The cold weather made it even more challenging for our firefighters, but they worked tirelessly to protect lives and property.”
The fire has caused significant disruption, with residents served by the Village of Ovid Water system urged to limit water usage to ensure adequate supply for firefighting efforts. Crews remain on the scene, extinguishing lingering hot spots and overhauling the site.
This tragedy marks the second major fire to hit downtown Ovid in recent years. January 2024 marked the 10-year anniversary of a similar blaze that destroyed another block in the village. Residents are advised to stay clear of the affected area and adhere to water conservation measures to support ongoing emergency operations.
Photos of the scene by Rachel Burkholder captured the scale of the destruction, with flames lighting up the night sky and debris scattered across Main Street. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
