MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Matt Freese played a crucial role in the U.S. Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) progression to the Gold Cup semifinals, saving penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Costa Rica.

Freese, a Harvard graduate and goalkeeper for New York City FC, made three important saves in the shootout, which allowed the USMNT to advance after their group stage opener featured a 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. His specialized focus on penalty kicks during college has significantly influenced his performance on the field.

“I did a very long research project in college about penalty kicks,” Freese noted. “Being able to rely on that research and analyze statistics during the game is massive.” His expertise helped him outlast Costa Rica’s famed goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the shootout.

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino highlighted Freese’s journey, acknowledging the need for a strong competition among goalkeepers as they approach the 2026 World Cup.

Matt Turner has the experience, having played in the 2022 World Cup, but this tournament shows we need options,” Pochettino said. “Testing new players gives us insight into their ability to handle pressure.”

Turner, the usual starter, struggled for club playing time, which opened the door for Freese. The 25-year-old has proven himself since taking over as New York City FC’s starter, replacing Sean Johnson, and led his team through intense playoff situations.

Freese’s performance in the Gold Cup matches saw him concede three goals, but his standout saves in crucial moments, including the one against Calvo in the shootout, showcased his mental strength. “In the moment, I focus on my game and helping my team,” Freese said.

This performance reinforces Freese’s status as a rising star in US soccer. He expressed gratitude for the confidence Pochettino and his teammates have shown him and emphasized his commitment to staying prepared for upcoming challenges.

As the tournament progresses, Freese looks to continue his successful run, while the USMNT prepares to face Guatemala, with hopes of advancing even further in the Gold Cup.
