Maui Doctor Arrested for Attempted Murder of Wife on Hiking Trail

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Honolulu police apprehended Gerhardt Konig, 46, near Pali Highway following a brief foot chase late Monday evening after he allegedly assaulted his wife during a hike at Pali Lookout.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when police say Konig attempted to push his 36-year-old wife off a trail and struck her on the head with a rock. She suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services.
Sources indicate that the assault followed an argument after the victim refused to take a picture with Konig. Reports also suggest he brandished two syringes during the altercation, attempting to poke her with them.
According to police reports, Konig, a physician with the Anesthesia Medical Group, was last seen wearing a light gray shirt, light blue shorts, and carrying a black bag. He is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds.
Maui Health confirmed that Konig has been suspended from his medical responsibilities pending an investigation into the incident. The organization emphasized its commitment to patient safety and indicated full cooperation with law enforcement. “We take these concerns seriously and are committed to upholding the highest standards of patient care,” a Maui Health representative stated.
As a precaution, law enforcement has increased their presence near the Pali Puka trail and advised the public not to offer rides to strangers. The Pali Lookout area has been closed indefinitely due to ongoing police activity.
Anyone with information regarding the incident or Konig’s whereabouts is urged to contact police at 911 or CrimeStoppers Honolulu at 808-955-8300.
