Maui Doctor Attempted Murder Hiking Trail

HONOLULU, Hawaii — A Maui doctor is in custody following a six-hour manhunt triggered by an alleged attempted murder of his wife on a popular Oahu hiking trail. Gerhardt Konig, 46, was arrested Monday evening near Nuuanu Pali Drive after a brief chase with police.

The incident began around 10 a.m. at the Pali Lookout, where Konig reportedly attempted to push his wife off the trail and struck her multiple times with a rock. The victim, 36, suffered significant head and facial injuries and was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Witnesses reported seeing the attack and called 911, which led to an immediate response from law enforcement. Officers arrived to find the woman severely injured, prompting a swift search for Konig, who fled the scene prior to their arrival.

“What you’re seeing now is an outward expression of the things that they’ve been experiencing within the household,” said Sanoe Kaaihue, Executive Director of a domestic violence advocacy group. She noted that the couple were well-known and respected in their community, highlighting the fact that domestic violence can occur in any household, regardless of public perception.

Konig’s wife was able to identify him as the attacker, which led police to issue a bulletin about his suspected whereabouts. After scouring the Pali Lookout area, authorities captured Konig shortly after 6 p.m.

“We will be seeking second-degree attempted murder charges with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney,” said a spokesperson from the Honolulu Police Department.

Maui Health, where Konig works as an anesthesiologist under a contract with an independent agency, confirmed that they have suspended his medical staff privileges pending the investigation. The organization emphasized its commitment to patient safety.

“Maui Health takes these concerns seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate,” the organization stated in a press release.

Prior to his position in Maui, Konig served as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. His background includes extensive medical training and a history in academia, but he has been on the island since 2023.

This remains an ongoing investigation, with further details expected to emerge in the coming days. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, resources are available. You can call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788 to receive confidential support.
