Mauritius Allows Cruise Ship to Dock After Gastroenteritis Scare

Mauritius has given clearance for the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship to dock at the port of Port Louis following concerns of a cholera outbreak onboard. The vessel, with over 2,000 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members, was initially held back amid fears of a health risk. However, after thorough checks, it was confirmed that the passengers had gastroenteritis, not cholera, and have now fully recovered, as stated by Dr. Bhooshun Ori from the Mauritius Ministry of Health.

The Norwegian Dawn passengers, including Mary Francovilla Dees, experienced mild stomach illness symptoms during their journey from South Africa. Despite the delay, the atmosphere onboard remained calm, with passengers engaging in various activities like poolside lounging and attending shows.

Health authorities in Mauritius conducted screenings for all passengers upon disembarkation, ensuring medical assistance for those in need. The ongoing cholera outbreak across southern Africa, with over 188,000 cases and thousands of deaths, contributed to the cautious approach taken by Mauritian officials.

Due to the health scare, the ship’s disembarkation and embarkation schedules were adjusted, causing logistical challenges for passengers, like Rob Hopkins, who faced flight disruptions. The extended stay in Mauritius affected planned departures to various destinations like the UK, Dubai, and Paris.

Following the delays, the Norwegian Cruise Line stepped in to assist affected passengers with modified travel plans, offering support and accommodations as needed. The rigorous sanitation protocols onboard the Norwegian Dawn were highlighted as crucial in maintaining the safety of guests and crew members.
