May Brings Double Payments for SSI Recipients Amid Social Security Changes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive two checks during May 2025 due to a schedule quirk. The first payment for May is set for May 1, while the second check for June will be issued on May 30.
This year, June 1 falls on a Sunday, necessitating the early June payment. About 8 million people benefit from SSI, which helps those with limited income, blindness, or disabilities.
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), regular Social Security benefits for retirees and older adults are issued on Wednesdays. Recipients born between the 1st and 10th of the month will receive their checks on the second Wednesday (May 14), those born between the 11th and 20th will receive them on the third Wednesday (May 21), and recipients born after the 20th will receive theirs on the fourth Wednesday (May 28).
Individuals who began receiving benefits before May 1997 typically receive their payments on the 3rd of each month. Those with SSI will therefore receive their benefit on the 1st.
The SSA has indicated that similar double payment occurrences will take place in August and October this year, where recipients will face no payments in subsequent months. In August, checks are scheduled for August 1 and August 29, while in October, two checks will be issued and no checks in November.
Overall, approximately 1 in 3 SSI recipients also receive Social Security payments. It’s crucial for these recipients to stay updated with the SSA’s distribution schedule to avoid any confusion regarding when funds will arrive in their accounts. The SSA provides a yearly payment schedule for beneficiaries to help with budgeting.
