MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. — A 64-year-old man from Oregon died Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency while hiking the Manitou Incline. The incident occurred just before 10:30 a.m., prompting bystanders to call 911 for immediate assistance.

Emergency responders from the Manitou Springs Police Department and the Manitou Springs Fire Department arrived on the scene to find bystanders performing CPR on the man. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The City of Manitou Springs confirmed that the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is collaborating in the investigation of this incident. Officials stated, “The Manitou Incline is a popular but strenuous hiking destination that draws visitors from around the country.”

City officials urged all climbers, especially those coming from out of state, to assess their physical condition before tackling the challenging hike, which rises over 2,000 feet in elevation over just under one mile.

“We thank the bystanders who quickly intervened and attempted CPR,” said Manitou Springs Fire Chief Keith Buckmiller. “Their immediate actions are commendable and reflect the compassion of our community.”

The exact cause of the man’s death is still under investigation. As of now, no further details have been released regarding the circumstances surrounding his medical emergency.
