Usuaa Election Candidates Profiles 2024

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — As the University of Alaska Anchorage‘s Student Government, the USUAA, prepares for its upcoming elections, candidates are stepping forward to shape the future of the student body. The Northern Light reached out to interview various candidates for key positions, uncovering their motivations, goals, and strategies to engage fellow students.

Among the candidates is Macchelssy Dinganga, who is running for the position of senator. In an email interview, Dinganga expressed her belief that all students deserve to have their voices heard. “I want to help make UAA a more supportive, inclusive, and opportunity-rich environment for all students — whether they’re on campus, working full-time, or learning online,” she wrote.

Dinganga outlined her objectives if elected, including enhancing communication between USUAA and the student body, advocating for mental health resources, and supporting student-led initiatives. To achieve these goals, she intends to conduct listening sessions, collaborate with fellow students, and use campus media effectively for outreach.

“USUAA serves as a bridge between students and administration,” Dinganga noted. “It provides students a platform to influence campus policies, access funding for clubs and events, and get involved in leadership.” She encourages students to engage with USUAA by attending meetings and sharing their ideas and concerns.

Another prominent candidate, Jason Ritter, is running for president on a ticket with vice-presidential candidate Andi Bryant. Ritter emphasizes accountability and advocacy in his campaign, stating, “I believe students deserve clear communication, meaningful advocacy, and leadership that holds the university accountable, especially in decisions that directly affect our day-to-day lives.”

Ritter’s slate of goals includes improving transparency around student fees, advocating for more flexible course options, and enhancing campus resources, such as study spaces and mental health support. Drawing from his leadership experience as the Public Relations Director and Director of Finance for the Accounting Club, as well as his role within USUAA, he aims to present evidence-based proposals to decision-makers.

He stressed that an active student government is crucial for ensuring that student voices matter: “It can be a powerful channel for real change — but only when it’s transparent, approachable, and responsive.” Ritter invites students to participate in USUAA by attending meetings, providing feedback, or running for office.

Emily Hufford, a candidate for vice president, underscores her commitment to fostering a supportive community within UAA. Working alongside Arel Gutierrez, Hufford aims to ensure that students feel connected and included. “Through my previous roles, I’ve realized how much I enjoy helping people feel included, supported and connected,” she said.

Hufford’s goals include raising awareness of mental health resources and promoting events that cater to a diverse student population. Her established experience in various student organizations positions her well to advocate for her peers’ needs effectively.

Gutierrez, aiming for the presidential position alongside Hufford, references his ambition to continue the values of outgoing president Eisa Chang. He aims to maintain USUAA’s visibility on campus amidst significant turnover in its membership. “I accept the role to be the one who carries the torch to light the path of where our organization will go,” he stated.

His campaign focuses on community building, advocating for mental health resources and menstrual products, and enhancing course delivery methods. He emphasizes the importance of inclusive decision-making, explaining, “We need opposition to make better detailed decisions.”

Both candidates emphasize the importance of student engagement within USUAA, indicating various pathways for participation through committees and meetings, further encouraging students to voice concerns and ideas.

The upcoming USUAA elections promise a chance for students to influence their representation and advocate for essential resources on campus. Engaging with these candidates is vital as UAA moves forward into a new era of student governance.
