Mega Millions Jackpot Climbs to $256 Million Amid Record Low Wins

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Mega Millions jackpot has surged to $256 million for Tuesday’s drawing after no winning tickets were sold for the previous drawing held on Friday. The increase comes amidst one of the lowest win counts in the game’s history.

During the March 8 drawing, the winning numbers were 8, 20, 48, 58, 60, and the Mega Ball was 7. Although there was no grand prize winner, three tickets sold in New York matched four out of five numbers plus the Mega Ball, winning a third-place prize of $10,000 each.

“With no jackpot winners, the prize has ballooned considerably,” said a spokesman from the New York Lottery. “This could be a life-changing amount for the lucky ticket holders come Tuesday.”

As ticket sales continue to rise, players can expect to purchase tickets at various convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery outlets, with online purchasing available in several states, including New York. Tickets cost $2 each, and for an additional dollar, players can add a Megaplier, which multiplies non-jackpot prizes.

According to lottery officials, only four tickets nationwide matched all six Mega Millions numbers so far this year, the fewest jackpots recorded in a single year since the game was launched in 2002. The most recent big winner was from Arizona, who took home a $113 million jackpot.

“It’s a unique opportunity,” said lottery expert Michael Henderson. “In April, the cost of tickets is set to increase, so now might be the best time to play if you want a better chance at those major payouts.”

Starting April 5, the price for a regular ticket will go up to $5 and $6 for the multiplier option. Officials expect this hike will create bigger prizes for winners and higher grand jackpots in future drawings.
