Mel Gibson California Protests And Wildfires

Los Angeles, CA – Actor Mel Gibson has sharply criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their handling of recent protests in the city and responses to devastating wildfires earlier this year. In an appearance on Fox News, Gibson expressed frustration with what he called ‘poor leadership’ and incompetence from both officials.

Gibson, known for his roles in films like “Braveheart,” condemned the lack of decisive action amid rampant lawlessness and civil unrest. ‘Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have already proven their incompetence and poor leadership during the Los Angeles wildfires,’ Gibson stated. He added that it was evident they could not manage crises effectively: ‘Whether it’s sheer incompetence or outright malevolence, the reality is stark.’

The actor’s comments come as Los Angeles faces escalating protests that began on June 6, aimed at raising awareness against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Over the weekend, demonstrations turned violent, leading to rioting and property damage. In response, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops, a move that has drawn criticism from Newsom and Bass.

Gibson previously lost his home in the Palisades Fire in January and has been an outspoken advocate for recalling Newsom as he joined the Saving California movement. In February, he criticized Newsom and Bass at a press conference in Altadena, saying, ‘We deserve much more and much better, and there is absolutely no adequate excuse for this gross mismanagement.’

As violent protests continue in the city, Trump authorized 4,000 National Guard troops and 7,000 U.S. Marines to assist local law enforcement. This marked the first time in sixty years a president has taken such action without the request of a state governor. Newsom contested this decision, taking legal action against the order.

A federal district court judge has ruled Trump’s deployment illegal, ordering the return of control over the National Guard to Newsom. However, a federal appeals court temporarily blocked the ruling, leaving the National Guard under Trump’s control until a hearing is scheduled.

In the wake of the protests, Mayor Bass implemented a curfew in parts of downtown Los Angeles, which has since been extended. Governor Newsom, serving his second term, announced he will not seek re-election in 2026, while Bass has confirmed her intention to run again.
