The much-anticipated launch of il Mercato Centrale has finally brought the flavors of Italy to Melbourne‘s CBD. Located on Collins Street, this newly opened destination offers visitors an extensive selection of artisanal food outlets and aims to transport them to the heart of Italian culinary culture.

Featuring 23 artisan stalls spread across two floors and a dedicated event space on the third, il Mercato Centrale Melbourne is more than just a food hub. “The goal has always been to create more than just a food hub,” said General Manager Gary Patikkis. “We wanted to establish an immersive cultural destination, a place where people can fully experience the vibrant Italian community and essence.”

This venue marks the first expansion for the successful market that initially opened in Italy’s cities like Florence, Milan, Rome, and Turin. It represents a significant collaboration, encouraged by the shared vision of founder Umberto Montano and partner Eddie Muto. Montano expressed his excitement at bringing the market to life in Melbourne, which he described as a city rich in cultural vibrancy and a fitting location for such an ambitious project.

The diverse offerings within il Mercato Centrale showcase the depth of Italian cuisine. On the ground level, visitors can enjoy delicacies such as freshly baked breads and pastries at il forno, Italian-inspired sweets at la pasticceria, and traditional Lavazza coffee at il caffè. Fresh produce, meats, seafood, and more are available from vendors with long-standing expertise in their respective fields.

The first floor houses unique dining experiences, offering handmade pasta, traditional pizza, and even a burger option at Lo Smash Burger—all brought together by Italian craftsmanship. Other gastronomic delights include cheese, wine, and spirits crafted with local ingredients, ensuring a blend of Italian tradition and Australian flair.

Beyond the food offerings, il Mercato Centrale aims to become a cultural hub with its purpose-built event space hosting monthly artisan masterclasses and free community events. Moreover, designed to accommodate a wide range of occasions, the venue can host up to 3000 guests, promising to contribute meaningfully to Melbourne’s economic and cultural landscape.

Open seven days a week, il Mercato Centrale is set to be a must-visit destination for anyone eager to experience the spiritual and culinary essence of Italy in the heart of Melbourne.
