Messi Inter Miami Contract Extension

FORT LAUDERDALE, FloridaLionel Messi is nearing a contract extension with Inter Miami that could keep him with the MLS club until at least 2026. A source familiar with the discussions revealed this on Thursday, stating negotiations have been ongoing for several months.

Messi, who joined Inter Miami in July 2023, initially signed a two-and-a-half-year deal worth approximately $150 million. The club has been pressing for his renewal for various reasons, including the upcoming inauguration of their new stadium near Miami International Airport expected next year.

The demand for tickets is believed to be significantly lower if Messi is not on the roster, as the team has been actively selling seat packages since last year. At 38, Messi has scored 20 goals and provided 11 assists this season, making him one of the league’s top performers.

Last season, Messi was named the MLS MVP despite missing 15 of the team’s 34 regular-season games due to injuries or national team duty with Argentina. His presence has already helped Inter Miami secure their first two trophies, including the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters’ Shield.

Messi’s continued participation with Inter Miami also anticipates increased global popularity, especially with the next World Cup taking place in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in 2026, when he and Argentina will aim to defend their title.
