Met Gala 2025: A Celebration of Black Dandyism and Style

New York City, NY – The Met Gala 2025 is set to take place tonight, May 5, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, marking one of fashion’s most significant events of the year. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s acclaimed book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” This gala will celebrate the creativity and elegance of Black male fashion.
Hosting the livestream for Vogue this evening will be singer and actor Teyana Taylor, actor and producer La La Anthony, and actor Ego Nwodim. The live coverage will begin at 6 PM EST and will also be available on various digital platforms.
The gala acts as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, traditionally coinciding with the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. This year, the gala already raised a record $31 million ahead of the event, breaking last year’s record.
The exhibition itself is divided into twelve sections, showcasing garments and artwork from eminent figures including Torkwase Dyson and André Grenard Matswa. The exhibit aims to highlight the historical significance of Black dandyism, a movement that celebrates elegance and style in the face of adversity.
In addition, this year’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” aligns with the exhibition’s focus on menswear. Attendees must adhere to a no-phone policy during the gala, ensuring an exclusive experience.
Celebrities from various fields, including sports, fashion, and entertainment, are expected to grace the blue carpet, a notable change from the traditional red. The blue theme has been confirmed through early arrival photos shared online.
Despite weather forecasts predicting rain, the arrivals will likely go on uninterrupted, as the blue carpet and walkways will be covered to keep guests dry. Celebrities typically gather at nearby hotels such as The Carlyle and The Mark Hotel before making their grand entrance.
As anticipation builds, Black men’s style will take center stage tonight, bringing attention to the cultural significance and richness of Black fashion. Many guests, including honorary chair LeBron James, who is unavailable due to injury, will contribute to this historic celebration.
The Met Gala continues to be a platform for significant cultural discussions, emphasizing diversity and elegance through its themes and attendee representation.
