Icy Roads Metro Detroit Winter Weather

DETROIT, Mich. – Nearly 20 school districts in Metro Detroit have announced closures for Thursday, Feb. 6, as a freezing weather system sweeps through the region, creating hazardous road conditions and the potential for power outages.

The National Weather Service predicts a mix of snow and freezing rain will begin around 8 p.m. Wednesday, transitioning to freezing rain by midnight and continuing until 7 a.m. Thursday. The area is expected to receive up to 1/10 of an inch of ice, with higher accumulations possible in southern parts of Southeast Michigan.

“Even a thin layer of ice can make roads extremely dangerous,” said a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation. “We urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during the morning commute.”

The icy conditions are also expected to coat power lines, raising concerns about potential outages. DTE Energy has placed crews on standby to respond to any disruptions. “We’re monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to address any issues that arise,” a DTE spokesperson said.

Local officials are advising residents to prepare for the possibility of power outages and to exercise caution when traveling. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing, which could exacerbate the icy conditions.

For the latest updates on school closures and weather conditions, residents are encouraged to check local news outlets and the National Weather Service website.
