Miami Vice Reboot May Star Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler
HOLLYWOOD, CA — Director Joseph Kosinski is in early talks with stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler to lead his upcoming reboot of the iconic series “Miami Vice.” Speaking at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards on Nov. 6, Kosinski expressed excitement about the potential casting.
“Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time and always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch,” Kosinski said. “If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.” Jordan is reportedly in discussions to play Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler is being considered for the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, Kosinski confirmed.
Kosinski, known for this summer’s “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” revealed that the new film will be set in 1985. He teased audiences with a glimpse of the film’s period aesthetics, mentioning that it will reflect the vibrant style of that decade.
The reboot aims to explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami, echoing the original series that reshaped American television. The show, which aired from 1984 to 1989, featured detectives Crockett and Tubbs navigating the dangerous underbelly of the city, while being celebrated for its stylish visuals and memorable soundtrack.
Production for the new “Miami Vice” film is expected to start next year, with filming planned for IMAX. Kosinski will co-produce alongside Dylan Clark, with Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy writing the script.
The anticipation for this reboot is high, especially following previous adaptations that fell short of critical acclaim. Fans are hopeful this version will capture the essence of the beloved original.
