Michael Caine Reveals Surprising Favorite Film He’s Never Watched
LONDON, UK — Michael Caine, the legendary actor known for his extensive film career, recently opened up about his viewing habits regarding his own movies. Surprisingly, Caine admitted that he rarely revisits his past work, even after starring in over 130 films. Among his extensive filmography, there is only one movie he can’t resist watching when he stumbles upon it: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
During an interview, Caine was asked if he ever revisited his films. He candidly replied, “I never look at anything. The only thing I ever look at, and I find myself, I get sucked into it, is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. If I see Dr. Schaffhausen walking in, I think, ‘Wait a minute, I’ve got to look at this for a minute.’ And then I’m stuck there.”
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, directed by Frank Oz, features a comedic dynamic between Caine and Steve Martin, who play rival con artists. Caine’s character, Lawrence Jameson, attempts to outmaneuver Martin’s Freddy Benson in a bet to swindle $50,000 from a wealthy heiress.
Caine’s enjoyment of this film stands out among various less successful flicks in his catalog, such as Jaws: The Revenge and Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. Although these films did not meet critical acclaim, they contributed significantly to Caine’s financial success and family well-being. He famously missed the chance to collect an Academy Award in person due to his work on Jaws: The Revenge.
Though Caine has expressed his disinterest in many of his films, he cherishes Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, highlighting the unique experience it provided him. While he may not think of it as his best or most successful film, its nostalgic value clearly makes it a favorite that he loves to revisit.
If trapped in a room for eternity and asked to choose a single Michael Caine film to watch, it appears there would be no competition: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels would be the one.
