Michael J Fox, renowned actor and advocate for Parkinson's Disease research, recently spoke candidly about his experience living with the disease during an interview with Tom Brook on BBC Breakfast. Fox, who has been nominated for a BAFTA for his documentary Still about his life, revealed that he initially chose to keep his diagnosis hidden from the public.

Reflecting on his decision, Fox shared, “I didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t know how it was going to manifest itself and I didn’t know what to expect. No one could really tell me what to expect.” However, instead of retreating from the public eye, the 62-year-old actor became an advocate and launched a foundation to raise funds for Parkinson’s research.

Describing his disease as both challenging and annoying, Fox emphasized that for some individuals, Parkinson’s can be devastating. However, he sees his own diagnosis as an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others. “I would say it’s a gift,” he shared. “I realized I had to turn around and turn it into something and make it a positive thing that affected other people in a positive way.”

Michael J Fox’s positive outlook and dedication to helping others have garnered widespread admiration. Fans who watched his interview on BBC Breakfast took to Twitter to express their respect and appreciation for his remarkable attitude. The actor’s role in shows like The Good Wife and The Good Fight, where he incorporates his own illness into his lawyer character, was also highly praised.

Though Fox retired from acting in 2021 due to his health, his documentary Still has thrust him back into the spotlight. The film provides a retrospective look at his career in the 90s and his life after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Expressing the themes of resilience and hope, Fox described it as the story of “an incurable optimist meets an incurable disease.”

The BBC Breakfast segment concluded with the hosts, Tom Brook and Sally Nugent, acknowledging the incredible journey and impact Michael J Fox has made. Nugent exclaimed, “Who would’ve thought when we watched him all those years ago that he would go on to be such an incredible campaigner changing lives.” Recognizing his superstar status during the 80s, Brook added, “He was huge, wasn’t he? Absolutely huge and still using that power, that celebrity, to have his say.”

Michael J Fox’s openness about his Parkinson’s Disease, his advocacy work, and his resilience continue to inspire and uplift others. His BAFTA nomination for Still highlights the importance of shedding light on the realities of living with a chronic illness and the power of personal storytelling.
