Michael Maguire, currently the coach of the New South Wales (NSW) State of Origin team, is edging closer to becoming the head coach of the Brisbane Broncos. This development follows the recent meeting of the NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) board, which convened to address the possibility of releasing Maguire from his contractual obligations. Maguire expressed his aspiration to take on the role at Broncos after the recent dismissal of former coach Kevin Walters.

According to reports, Maguire remains the leading candidate to replace Walters. Although he is contracted with the NSWRL until the end of next season, Maguire communicated his interest to NSWRL chairman Paul Conlon over the weekend, soon after his appearance at a Carbine Club luncheon where he discussed his plans for the 2025 State of Origin series. This has now cast doubt on Maguire’s involvement in NSW’s future campaigns.

Despite Maguire’s success with the Blues this year, leading them to a series victory after an initial heavy defeat, his transition to the Broncos is seen by many as a strategic fit for the team. Maguire’s training camps in the Blue Mountains received positive feedback from players. However, moving to Brisbane presents its challenges, particularly given the support Walters had from former club players.

The situation remains complicated due to NSWRL CEO Dave Trodden’s absence, as he is currently on a scheduled vacation in Europe. While the NSWRL has not made any public statements, internal discussions are reportedly underway to accommodate Maguire’s release.

If Maguire leaves his NSW role, it necessitates a search for his successor, a task compounded by the uncertain future of the NSW women’s coach, Kyle Hilder. Potential candidates for the men’s coaching position include former Origin figures such as Paul McGregor, Danny Buderus, John Cartwright, and Andrew Johns.

The NSWRL is taking careful consideration of possible replacements, with notable names like Ivan Cleary and Craig Bellamy mentioned, alongside other potential contenders including Trent Barrett, Michael Ennis, Brad Arthur, and Brett White. The criteria for selection prioritizes both experience and potential to continue the Blues’ recent success.

Nine’s Danny Weidler reports that Maguire will likely be publicly confirmed as the Broncos’ coach on a three-year contract “within hours.” This anticipated announcement follows Maguire conveying his long-term ambitions to relocate to Queensland and captain the renowned NRL club.
