Michelle Pfeiffer Elvira Audition Story

LOS ANGELES, CA — Michelle Pfeiffer recently shared the intense experiences of her audition for the role of Elvira in the Brian De Palma film ‘Scarface.’ During an appearance on ‘SmartLess,’ hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, she revealed how her journey to land the role was filled with challenges and surprises.

Pfeiffer recounted that while De Palma was keen on casting her, co-star Al Pacino had reservations at first. ‘Al will admit this,’ she said, ‘[but] he didn’t really want me for the part.’

The actress described how she initially wowed De Palma and the casting director, but as the audition process continued over two months, her confidence dwindled. ‘I just [got] worse and worse and worse, because I’m just afraid. And by the end, I’m bad,’ she admitted.

Despite her disappointment, Pfeiffer expressed that she didn’t blame Pacino for being skeptical. ‘He just was like, “[She’s] bad. And Brian finally comes to me and says, ‘You know, doll, it’s just not gonna work out.’ I’m like, ‘I know, man. I’m sorry.’ Because Brian really wanted me,’ she explained.

After some time, Pfeiffer received unexpected news that she was being called back for a screen test. ‘So I show up and I don’t even give a shit, ’cause I know I’m not getting this part.’ However, the screen test, particularly the restaurant scene where her character explodes in anger, turned out to be ‘my best work of the film.’

A pivotal moment during the audition occurred when Pfeiffer accidentally caused a scene that was both chaotic and bloody. ‘I swipe the table of the dishes and glasses break, the dishes break, cut. There’s blood everywhere. They all run over to me to see where I’ve cut myself. Well, I didn’t cut me. I cut Al,’ she recalled, describing how she accidentally cut Pacino’s finger.

‘I thought, ‘Well, there goes that part.’ [But] actually I think that was the day [Pacino] was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. I think, yeah, she’s not bad,’” Pfeiffer concluded.

‘Scarface,’ which premiered in 1983, tells the story of Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who rises to power as a drug dealer in Miami and faces a tragic downfall due to addiction.
