Michigan Law Enforcement Appreciation Day 2025

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II proclaimed January 9 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Michigan, honoring the dedication of over 18,800 law enforcement officials across the state. The proclamation recognizes the sacrifices made by officers who protect and serve their communities daily.

“On Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we celebrate the brave Michiganders who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the people of Michigan,” said Governor Whitmer. She emphasized her commitment to funding public safety and ensuring law enforcement officers have the resources needed to keep communities safe.

Colonel James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police, highlighted the collaboration between law enforcement and community partners. “Law enforcement officers throughout our great state display their bravery and heroism each and every day to fight crime, ensure justice, and work toward creating a Michigan where everyone feels safe and secure,” he said.

Nate Johnson, President of the Michigan State Police Troopers Association, praised the officers’ commitment to building stronger communities. “Every day, they make personal sacrifices to ensure our safety, promote justice, and maintain peace, all while fostering trust and accountability,” Johnson stated.

Since taking office, the Whitmer-Gilchrist administration has invested over $1.6 billion in public safety programs. Recent budget allocations include $75 million for a Public Safety Trust Fund, $25 million for safety communication system upgrades, and $7.8 million for firearm injury prevention grants. School safety has also been a priority, with initiatives like Operation Safe Neighborhoods and funding for school resource officers.

Sheriffs from across the state, including Genesee County Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson and Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia Dyer, expressed gratitude for the recognition of their officers’ efforts. “Today, we take a moment to appreciate them for all they do,” Dyer said.
