Michigan Landfill Search For Missing Woman

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Authorities on Monday launched an extensive search of a Michigan landfill for evidence related to the disappearance of Ashley Elkins, a 30-year-old Detroit-area woman who has been missing for more than a week. The search, involving dozens of officers, focused on the Pine Tree landfill in Lenox Township, Macomb County.

Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin confirmed the operation, stating, “Trying to bring closure to the family. We had 40, 50 officers out here.” Elkins was reported missing on Jan. 3, and her car was later found in Roseville, a neighboring community of Warren, where she resided.

The Pine Tree landfill, a massive site that processes tons of trash from southeastern Michigan, has been the focus of similar searches in the past. In 2022, Detroit police spent months searching for the remains of 17-year-old Zion Foster, whose body was believed to have been disposed of in a dumpster. Despite the extensive effort, Foster’s remains were never found, though a man was convicted in connection with her death.

Elkins’ disappearance has drawn significant attention, with a former boyfriend already charged with lying to police during the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the evidence they are seeking but emphasized the importance of the landfill search in their efforts to locate Elkins.

The search is expected to resume Tuesday, as officials continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. The case has left the community on edge, with many hoping for answers and closure for Elkins’ family.
