Miguel Ángel Russo, Renowned Argentine Coach, Passes Away at 69

Buenos Aires, Argentina — Miguel Ángel Russo, a luminary in Argentine football, passed away at the age of 69 on Thursday after a lengthy battle with cancer. The beloved coach, who had recently been managing Boca Juniors, left a lasting legacy both as a player and as a coach.

Born on April 9, 1956, in Lanús, Russo began his career in Estudiantes de La Plata, where he played from 1975 to 1988. He participated in over 400 matches and helped secure two major titles: the Campeonato Metropolitano and the Nacional in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Known for his solid game as a central midfielder, Russo was revered for his leadership on the field.

After retiring as a player, he swiftly transitioned into coaching, starting in 1989 with Lanús and achieving two promotions to Primera División. During his 30-plus years as a coach, Russo directed various teams across seven countries, including Colombia’s Millonarios and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr.

His coaching accolades are numerous, including a standout achievement with Boca Juniors, leading the team to victory in the prestigious Copa Libertadores in 2007, where they defeated Gremio with a remarkable 5-0 aggregate score. This remains the largest margin in a final match of the tournament’s history.

Boca Juniors expressed their sorrow through an official statement, acknowledging Russo’s indelible mark on the club and the sport. “Miguel leaves an unforgettable legacy within our institution and will always be a symbol of joy and camaraderie,” the statement read.

Aside from Boca, Russo enjoyed successful stints with Vélez Sarsfield, where he garnered a Clausura title in 2005, and multiple titles with Rosario Central, including the Copa de la Liga in 2023. His coaching journey also featured notable achievements in international club competitions, with significant successes in both the Colombian league and during his time in the Argentine top-flight.
