MINNEAPOLIS — Marjorie Johnson, known as Minnesota’s celebrated ‘Blue Ribbon Baker,’ has passed away at the age of 106, her family confirmed on Thursday.
Born in Minneapolis in 1919, Johnson’s passion for baking began at an early age. She baked her first cake when she was just eight years old, inspired by her mother, a talented baker.
Johnson entered her first baking contest in 1974 and quickly became a legend, amassing over 3,000 ribbons at county and state fairs, including more than 1,000 blue ribbons for her top-tier creations.
Her fame extended beyond Minnesota, as she attended prestigious events like the Grammys and Emmys. Johnson was a frequent guest on popular talk shows, where her warm personality and joyful spirit endeared her to millions. Jay Leno, in particular, invited her to serve as a guest correspondent, showcasing her charm and humor.
In 2007, she published a cookbook titled “The Road to Blue Ribbon Baking,” sharing her treasured baking techniques for breads, rolls, and cakes. Johnson’s legacy inspires countless bakers, who remember her enthusiasm for the craft.
Even at the age of 104, Johnson expressed her desire to keep baking and competing. In a 2023 interview, she advised aspiring bakers: “Just practice, practice. Practice really does make perfect. And the other thing, in case you enter the fair and don’t win a ribbon: Don’t. Give. Up!”
Her vibrant spirit and dedication to baking will leave a lasting impact on the baking community and beyond.
