Minnesota Lawmaker and Husband Fatally Shot in Political Violence

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot in their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The attacks also involved State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who were critically injured in a nearby city.
Governor Tim Walz confirmed the details during a press briefing, stating that the shooting is being investigated as a politically motivated act of violence. The Governor expressed his heartfelt condolences and emphasized the need for peace and dialogue in democracy. “This was a targeted act of political violence,” Walz said.
Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance L. Boelter, a security company employee with military training, initially attacked the Hoffmans before turning his weapon on the Hortmans. Both Hoffmans underwent surgery and are currently recovering, with medical staff reportedly feeling “cautiously optimistic” about their condition.
After the initial attack, police engaged in a confrontation with Boelter, who managed to flee on foot. The suspect’s abandoned vehicle contained a manifesto listing additional targets, suggesting that he intended to harm other lawmakers as well.
As a precautionary measure, local authorities issued a shelter-in-place order within a three-mile radius, urging residents to contact 911 if approached by individuals claiming to be law enforcement.
Former President Donald Trump commented on the situation, stating, “This violence will not be tolerated in the United States. God bless the great people of Minnesota,” and noted that the FBI would assist in the investigation.
The FBI has since placed a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter’s arrest, who allegedly wore a mask and impersonated a police officer to gain access to the victims. The search continues, with law enforcement focusing their efforts around Edinburgh Golf Course, where the suspect was last seen.
Various political figures, including former Vice President Joe Biden, condemned the violence, calling it a horrific act against democracy and urging the public to unite against political extremism.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incidents and promise to keep the community informed of any developments.
