Minnesota Elections 2025

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Voters across Minnesota headed to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, for municipal and school board elections. Incumbent Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is seeking a third term against 14 challengers, with state Sen. Omar Fateh highlighted as his main opponent.

Alongside the mayoral race, voters in St. Paul also chose between five candidates, including incumbent Mayor Melvin Carter, who is aiming for reelection. Polls for both cities closed at 8 p.m. local time.

In District 47, a special election was held to fill a vacant Senate seat after former Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell resigned following a burglary conviction. State Rep. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger, a Democrat, faced off against Republican Dwight Dorau for the open seat. The district favors Democratic candidates, having elected Mitchell with a significant majority in previous elections.

Meanwhile, a special election in Senate District 29 will determine the successor for the late Republican Sen. Bruce Anderson, who passed away in July 2025. Candidates include Republican Michael Holmstrom Jr. and Democrat Louis McNutt. With Anderson’s history of strong electoral performance, Republicans are expected to maintain control of this district.

In the Anoka-Hennepin School District, voters reelected all three incumbent school board members, leading to expectations of continued partisan gridlock. Kacy Deschene and Jeff Simon, aligned with the board’s liberal faction, successfully fended off challenges, while conservative Matt Audette also won his race. The board has often struggled to make decisions due to its 3-3 political split.

As of June, about 253,000 registered voters in Minneapolis were eligible to cast their ballots, with turnout in previous mayoral elections reflecting significant participation. Early returns suggested a competitive atmosphere, but official results will be tracked and announced late Tuesday evening.
